Not All Goat Milk Is the Same: Why Our Milk Starts With Happy, Healthy Goats

When people pick up a bar of Rowandale goat milk soap, they often ask us what makes goat milk so good for their skin.

But there’s another question we think is just as important:

What makes good goat milk?

At Rowandale, our answer starts long before the milk ever reaches the soap pot.

It starts in the barn.

It starts with what our goats eat, how they are cared for, the environment they live in, and something we believe matters tremendously: how they feel.

Because our goats aren’t simply milk producers.

They are Rowandale Therapy Goats.

The Goat Behind the Milk Matters

Goat milk naturally contains fats, fatty acids, proteins, vitamins, minerals and lactic acid—all components that have helped make goat milk such a beloved ingredient in skincare.

But milk isn’t manufactured to an identical formula.

It is produced by a living animal.

That means factors such as nutrition, stage of lactation, genetics, season and overall management can influence the composition and characteristics of the milk a goat produces.

That is why we don’t believe making exceptional goat milk products begins with a soap recipe.

It begins with exceptional goat care.

We Pay Attention to What Goes Into Our Goats

We are very intentional about the diet of our Rowandale goats.

Why?

Because nutrition doesn’t simply keep an animal alive. It provides the building blocks her body uses for everything—including producing milk.

We pay attention to good-quality forage, balanced nutrition, access to fresh water and the individual needs of our animals.

For us, feeding isn’t just another farm chore to check off the list.

It’s part of producing the milk that eventually becomes an ingredient in the products we make.

There is a wonderfully simple farm-to-face connection here:

Healthy inputs help support healthy goats. Healthy goats produce the milk we are proud to put into our products.

And Then There’s Stress

This is one of the things that makes the Rowandale story especially different.

We care about our goats’ stress levels.

Goats are social, intelligent and surprisingly sensitive animals. Changes in routine, uncomfortable surroundings, rough handling, social conflict and other stressors can affect their welfare.

So we work hard to create an environment where our goats feel secure and comfortable.

They have familiar herd mates.
They have routines.
They receive attention.
They browse, play and rest.
And, of course, many of them spend time doing what Rowandale goats are famous for—connecting with people.

Keeping stress low isn’t a marketing technique.

It’s animal husbandry.

We want our goats to have good lives simply because they deserve good lives.

And when the milk from those goats becomes an ingredient in something we’re making for your family, that care means even more to us.

They’re Therapy Goats First

There is something particularly special about making skincare with milk from our therapy herd.

These aren’t anonymous animals living somewhere we’ve never seen.

We know them.

We know their personalities.

We know who’s mischievous.

We know who’s affectionate.

We know who wants to be first at the gate and who would prefer to hang back.

We know the goats whose presence has made someone smile, helped start a conversation, or simply given a person a peaceful moment when they needed one.

The same goats people meet through Rowandale Therapy Goats are part of the story behind our goat milk products.

That’s a connection you simply can’t buy from an ingredient supplier.

Fresh Milk Is Different From a Powder on an Ingredient List

Many commercial goat milk products can be made with powdered or reconstituted goat milk because it is convenient, shelf-stable and easy to ship.

That’s very different from walking out to your own barn and knowing exactly where your milk came from.

For us, traceability doesn’t require a tracking number.

We know the goat.

We know how she is fed.

We know how she is cared for.

We know her environment.

And we know the standards we expect for the milk that goes into the products carrying the Rowandale name.

That is what farm to face means to us.

So, Is Rowandale Goat Milk Scientifically “Better”?

We think it’s important to be careful with that word.

Without laboratory testing comparing Rowandale milk with milk from other herds, we aren’t going to tell you that our milk contains a certain percentage more of this vitamin or that fatty acid.

What we can tell you is something we’re incredibly proud of:

We know exactly where our milk comes from, and we put tremendous care into the animals producing it.

We pay attention to nutrition.

We pay attention to their environment.

We pay attention to stress.

We pay attention to the individual goat.

And we use that fresh milk to make products in small batches rather than buying an anonymous goat milk ingredient and never knowing the animals behind it.

Maybe “Farm to Face” Should Start With the Farm

It’s easy to talk about beautiful skin.

We’d rather start by talking about beautiful animal care.

Because before goat milk can become an ingredient, a goat has to produce it.

And before we ask anything from our goats, we believe we have a responsibility to give something to them:

Good food.
Good care.
A safe environment.
Companionship.
Respect.
And a life with as little unnecessary stress as we can provide.

Perhaps that’s the real difference in a Rowandale bar of soap.

You’re not simply getting goat milk.

You’re getting milk with a story behind it.

A farm behind it.

And, most importantly, a goat behind it.

From our goats to your skin.
